TikTok is financing polarization in Europe and elsewhere
Thousands of AI-generated videos showing alleged mass protests in Iran, Venezuela, or in support of Palestine have amassed over 89 million views. Their creators aim to rapidly increase their follower count to sell the accounts or monetize them through TikTok’s rewards program, in a practice that violates both the platform’s rules and the Digital Services Act.

The Maldita.es Foundation has published an open letter to parliamentary groups urging them to grant the CNMC, the body responsible for implementing the DSA in Spain, the necessary powers. The law has been in force throughout the EU for three years and was approved by a very large majority, including among Spanish MEPs. The European Commission has already taken this non-compliance to the Court of Justice of the EU, and Spain risks being sanctioned.

The study shows that climate disinformation related to the 2024 Valencia DANA, spread on TikTok and YouTube, reached a wide audience and was amplified by the platforms’ own algorithms. The report demonstrates how this type of content distorts public debate during times of crisis and highlights that, despite fact-checking efforts, it continues to circulate even a year later, in some cases in direct violation of the platforms’ own policies.

Contribution of Fundación Maldita.es to the first annual report on the most prominent and recurring systemic risks on large online platforms and search engines. This report is to be produced each year by the European Board of Digital Services. In our contribution, we describe how disinformation can be particularly harmful to the safety and well-being of Europeans in various situations, including natural disasters and other emergencies, as well as elections.
