We are a non-profit foundation based in Spain working to build information integrity through journalism, technology, education, and public policy advocacy. Our mission is to equip citizens, journalists, educators, and institutions with the tools and capabilities needed to create a more resilient and trustworthy information ecosystem.
Maldita.es is our media outlet where we publish fact-checks, investigations, and journalistic content for the general public. Maldita.es Foundation is the non-profit legal entity that supports the entire project, including technology development, educational programs, research, and international projects. Both share the same mission, team, and values, but have complementary functions.
No. We are a strictly non-partisan and independent organization. We do not receive funding from political parties, nor do we allow any ideology to influence our work. We fact-check information across the entire political spectrum using the same rigorous methodology. You can read our neutrality policy at this link.
Our funding comes from diversified sources: European and international grants, agreements with technology platforms for verification services, contributions from our community of supporters, training and consulting services, and media collaborations. We publish our audited accounts annually, and no single funder can exceed 25% of our budget to ensure our independence.
We maintain a diversified funding policy, update all organizational transparency information every 6 months, are part of the EU Transparency Register, and have open methodologies that anyone can consult. Additionally, we are audited by two independent bodies: the International Fact-Checking Network and the European Fact-Checking Standards Network. All collaboration agreements include clauses protecting our editorial independence, which is non-negotiable.
You can send us suspicious content through our WhatsApp chatbot (+34 644 22 93 19) or through La Buloteca. We receive thousands of daily queries from our community and prioritize those with the greatest reach or potential for harm. The service is completely free.
Yes. All our fact-checks are publicly accessible and free of charge. We believe verified information should be a public good. The income that funds this work comes from other sources such as projects, training, and technology services—never from charging citizens to verify information.
We focus on disinformation affecting the public interest: health, politics, science, economics, migration, environment, and other socially relevant topics. We don't fact-check opinions (which are legitimate), but rather claims presented as facts that can be verified. We also don't verify private or personal content.
All our fact-checks include the sources consulted and the process followed to reach our conclusion. We are signatories of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) Code of Principles, comply with European Fact-Checking Standards Network (EFCSN) standards, and our methodology is externally audited. If we make a mistake, we correct it publicly following our Corrections Policy.
We have a Corrections Policy. You can write to us presenting your argument and supporting sources. We rigorously evaluate all complaints and, if we find an error, we publish a correction. Transparency and accountability are fundamental to our work.
