Fundación Maldita.es selected by Civitates for the “Tech & Democracy 2025” programme to strengthen digital democracy in Europe

With its participation, Fundación Maldita.es joins a diverse group of ten partners selected in the call, working to defend digital democracy—from rights advocates and fact-checkers to cyberfeminist collectives and legal observatories. Together, they aim to hold major platforms to account, monitor algorithmic harms, combat disinformation and build fairer and more equitable digital futures.

What will Fundación  Maldita.es do?

Maldita.es’ project is structured around three strategic pillars:

Strengthening institutional engagement and enforcement capacity: collaboration with key actors involved in digital policy will be deepened. Technical advice and policy recommendations will be provided to guide institutional action in enforcing the Digital Services Act (DSA), including the submission of complaints and the generation of methodologically sound evidence to support regulatory decisions.

Research production and platform monitoring: reports and analyses will be produced to identify systemic non-compliance by very large online platforms and search engines (VLOPs and VLOSEs), with particular attention to electoral periods and public emergencies. Compliance with risk assessment and mitigation obligations will be assessed, as well as the application of the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) and the GDPR in relation to disinformation and accountability.

Strategic communication and public awareness: campaigns will be launched targeting institutional stakeholders and the general public through opinion pieces, events and digital formats. In addition, activities will be organised to bring together decision-makers, experts and affected communities, promoting transparency and accountability in the digital environment.

The grant awarded amounts to €159,994.00, to be implemented between September 2025 and August 2027.
