50 European organizations begin to vote on the approval of the European Code of Professional Standards for fact-checkers

From this Monday, August 1th until next September 8th, more than 50 independent fact-checkers from more than 30 European countries will be able to vote on the adoption of the European Code of Professional Integrity, prepared by the European Fact-Checking Standards Network (EFCNS).

Once the voting is completed, and if the Code is approved by a majority of 75% of the voting organizations, it will be published on the EFCSN website in mid-September.

The first draft of the text currently being voted on was prepared in Oslo (Norway) last June by the fact-checking organizations that are part of the Working Committee, together with the six that make up the EFCSN Consortium, which It is led by Maldita.es.

After this first draft, more than 40 organizations have proposed and debated amendments throughout the month of July until a consensus was reached to achieve the ethical, methodological and transparency commitments that a verification organization must follow to be recognized as independent in Europe.

What are the next steps for the EFCSN?

The EFCSN is a project that emerged from the European Commission’s Call of Integrity of Social Media and is led by six European organizations focused on the fight against disinformation: Fundación Maldita.es (Spain), AFP (France), CORRECTIV (Germany), DEMAGOG (Poland), Pagella Politica / Facta (Italy) and EU DisinfoLab (Belgium).

Once the Code is published, all the organizations that are part of the EFCSN will meet in Madrid at the end of September to discuss and decide on the statutes of the network will be like, which will bring together all the European fact-checkers that sign and adhere to the text, as well as its governance.
