Fundación Maldita.es leads a European Union co-funded project to combat disinformation in Georgia

The project, SAFIMI: Georgian Society Against FIMI, disinformation and coordinated inauthentic behaviour (SAFIMI: Georgian society against disinformation, foreign information manipulation and interference, and coordinated inauthentic behaviour), will run from 2025 to 2027 and aims to protect Georgia’s information space from external threats.

The project is carried out in collaboration with Media Development Foundation, Transparency International Georgia and the Transatlantic Foundation. SAFIMI aims to build a collaborative network of media outlets, civil society organisations, local authorities and citizens to counter disinformation narratives and attempts at foreign manipulation.

Over 30 months, the Maldita.es team and its partners will develop research, training activities, multilingual journalistic materials and practical tools to detect, understand and respond to disinformation strategies. In addition, the project will provide financial and strategic support to local actors to strengthen their capacity for action.

More than 500 participants are expected to take part in training sessions, interactive forums and community events, with the aim of creating an active and well-informed community capable of defending the integrity of public debate in Georgia.

Maldita.es’ participation as the lead organisation in this project represents a new step in its internationalisation strategy and reinforces its commitment to fighting disinformation beyond Spain’s borders. SAFIMI reflects European recognition of Maldita.es’ work in journalism, technology, education and research to protect the right to truthful information.
