Maldita.es and the University of Granada receive a grant from the European Media & Information Fund to research disinformation dynamics on Telegram

Maldita.es, together with a group of researchers from the University of Granada, received a grant from the European Media and Information Fund (EMIF) to investigate the dynamics of disinformation in public channels on the private messaging platform Telegram, in order to analyse how different disinformation narratives emerge, spread and evolve, and to improve the available evidence to reduce the distribution of false content on similar platforms.

Maldita.es and the University of Granada receive a grant from the European Media & Information Fund to research disinformation dynamics on Telegram

In collaboration with researchers from the University of Granada, an open and replicable research methodology will be developed and implemented, using artificial intelligence models and machine learning techniques to improve the reach of the results. Maldita.es will mobilise its extensive communication channels and networks to widely disseminate the research findings among the public and decision-makers, raising awareness about the nature and dangers of disinformation on Telegram.

Maldita.es will also develop a position paper based on the results of the research addressing the dynamics of disinformation on private messaging platforms such as Telegram. This document will establish a clear stance on the issue, highlight key concerns, and issue a call to action with recommendations for stakeholders such as governments, platforms and civil society organisations.

Finally, with the support of researchers from the University of Granada, we will develop an automated disinformation glossary tool based on the research results, which will improve the effective monitoring of disinformation narratives on Telegram.

How much funding will Fundación Maldita.es receive to carry out the project?

Maldita.es has received €77,792.10 from EMIF to implement the project. The total project budget is €146,899.80.

Who is funding this project?

EMIF is a fund of the Instituto Universitario Europeo  and the Fundación Calouste Gulbenkian, with funding from Google News Initiative. The fund supports collaborative efforts to counter disinformation, expand independent fact-checking, and enable targeted research and innovation tools designed to strengthen the resilience and response of information ecosystems to disinformation.
