This project, Elections24Check, is pioneering and is supported by the Google News Initiative. Through its system, it compiles into a single database political fact-checks, debunks, explanatory articles and in-depth reports produced by the participating organisations, with the aim of identifying disinformation trends and narratives across the continent.
On the project’s website, users can search and filter articles in different languages related to specific countries, political parties or topics such as climate change, migration, or security and defence. The goal is to provide European citizens with quick access to data and facts to help them make informed decisions ahead of the elections taking place in June.
Users can also find statistical information on disinformation trends, enabling analysis by time period or by country.
Carlos Hernández-Echevarría, president of the EFCSN and deputy director of Maldita.es, explains that “the Elections24Check project offers an early warning system for disinformation emerging in different countries, not only within the European Union but also in neighbouring European countries. This is important because disinformation knows no borders.”
Gogle’s Vice President of Government Affairs and Public Policy for Europe, Annette Kroeber-Riel, added: “We are proud to support the work of fact-checking organisations across Europe at a crucial moment, as electoral disinformation can travel across borders and threaten democratic processes. This EFCSN-led initiative, together with its more than 40 member organisations, will support high-quality information for voters and pave the way for future electoral coalitions.”
