Argument checking is a complementary technique to fact-checking that appeals to citizens’ critical thinking and logical reasoning. The aim of this project is to develop a standardised methodology for its use through experimentation, which will make it possible to measure its effectiveness and how it is used by the public.
To this end, Fundación Maldita.es will develop several prototypes of this type of argumentation in different formats applicable to disinformation narratives about climate change. Researchers from Universidad de Navarra will carry out a series of tests with members of the public to assess which of the prototypes proves most effective in countering these narratives and whether incorporating argument checking into fact-checks strengthens their overall effectiveness. Based on these results, the concept will be implemented in Maldita.es’ regular journalistic practice.
This project builds on experiences from the COVID-19 pandemic, the invasion of Ukraine and the Valencia DANA floods, where the need to go beyond traditional fact-checking of disinformation was identified. Disinformation often relies on narratives that go beyond data and facts, creating stories that appeal to the public by blending factual elements with emotional components. This project seeks to generate evidence to identify and develop new methodological approaches that improve the effectiveness of efforts to combat disinformation.
