Fundación Maldita.es was recognized at the 4th Edition of the Alejandro Echevarría Awards , presented by Fundación Comunicando Futuro  to acknowledge individuals, projects, and organizations that are leaders in the fight against disinformation.

The awards ceremony took place on February 19, 2026, marking the anniversary of the passing of Alejandro Echevarría Busquet. The gala brought together representatives from the education, technology, media, and social sectors committed to defending accurate and responsible information.

The jury, composed of 16 experts from educational, technological, healthcare, business, and media organizations, highlighted Fundación Maldita.es’ sustained work in fact-checking and promoting transparency in information, recognizing its role as a benchmark in a context marked by the growth of disinformation and the erosion of public trust.

The President of Fundación Maldita.es, Clara Jiménez Cruz, described the recognition as an incentive for joint efforts among all stakeholders and encouraged different sectors to join forces in combating disinformation: “Institutions, companies, and political leaders play a key role in strengthening an integrity-based information ecosystem. Civil society organizations need support and funding for projects that defend the quality of information and citizen participation. It is time for philanthropy to be courageous, democracy needs to be funded.”

Jiménez Cruz also emphasized that the recognition comes at a particularly challenging time for the information ecosystem: “We are living in a context of information overload, polarization, and manipulated narratives. In response, media literacy is essential and must be part of the school curriculum. Training new generations in critical thinking is fundamental for society to develop real tools to confront disinformation and make informed decisions.

In this edition of the awards, other initiatives and professionals were also recognized, including Javier Santa Olalla (Media and Information Literacy Award); Think–Fluencer (Innovation in the Fight Against Disinformation Award); Prodigioso Volcán (Commitment in the Fight Against Disinformation Award); and PROVACUNO (Sectoral Disinformation Awareness Award). They were selected, along with Fundación Maldita.es, from 16 finalists out of a total of 109 submissions.

The Alejandro Echevarría Awards, promoted by Fundación Comunicando Futuro, aim to highlight initiatives that contribute to a better-informed society, with special attention to the impact of disinformation in areas such as health, science, education, the economy, and democracy, while placing particular emphasis on media literacy and critical thinking, especially among young people.
