The European observatory Iberifier, of which Maldita.es is a member, begins its second phase

Fundación Maldita.es will continue to be part of the project consortium, which has already become the largest Iberian digital media observatory since its creation in 2021.

So far, Iberifier has focused on researching, analysing and debunking hoaxes, as well as promoting good practices in the critical consumption of information by the public. In its second phase, planned to run until 2026, it will extend these activities to Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries as a whole, while coordinating its work with the rest of the observatories promoted by the European Commission in the EU’s 27 Member States, which together form the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO)

Who is part of the Iberifier observatory?

Fundación Maldita.es collaborates with 24 partners, including universities, fact-checkers and media outlets. The initiative is coordinated by the Universidad de Navarra  (Pamplona, Spain). You can see all the observatory’s partners here.

What will Maldita.es do?

Maldita.es will continue the technological development and maintenance of the Iberifier repository and will create new artificial intelligence–compatible features for it. These tools will enable more efficient detection and analysis of disinformation, speeding up the fact-checking process and improving the accuracy of results. Maldita.es, together with all the fact-checkers in the consortium, will continue to feed the repository with their articles and fact checks. In turn, Maldita.es will take part in compiling reports on disinformation narratives for the European Digital Media Observatory. This work will make it possible to identify trends and patterns in circulating disinformation, which is essential for developing more effective strategies.

In addition, Maldita.es will participate in the preparation of quarterly reports on interregional disinformation narratives covering Spain, Portugal and Latin America, providing a comprehensive overview of the disinformation landscape in the region. It will also coordinate the production of two annual reports reflecting the results of different content dissemination experiments to assess the effectiveness of various communication strategies to combat disinformation.

How much funding will Maldita.es recieve to carry put the project?

Fundación Maldita.es will receive €100,312.50. The total project budget is €1,270,854.17, and the project will run for three years, ending in 2026.

Who funds the project?

The project is co-funded by the European Union. [Ares(2024)3083614]
