The EFCSN elects its first governance body that will be presented at an event in Brussels on November 16

Following the approval of the European Code of Standards for Independent Verification Organizations last September, and the creation of a non-profit association , the European Fact-checking Standards Network (EFCSN) has approved its first governance body.

Eleven members from different data verification organizations in Europe are part of this body: five of them belonging to the organizers that make up the Consortium, among which is Maldita.es , and another six that have been voted by the members of the Consortium. representative group.

Among the functions they will perform are representing the European community of verifiers or evaluating those fact-checking organizations that adhere to the Code, with the aim of ensuring that they comply with the methodological, ethical and transparency standards that this Code establishes. contemplate.

In alphabetical order, the members of the first governance body of the EFCSN are:

  • Ana Brakus, executive director of Faktograf , the first media outlet with a fact-checking unit in Croatia.
  • Clara Jiménez Cruz, co-founder and CEO of Maldita.es .
  • David Schraven , editor of the German verification outlet CORRECTIV .
  • Gülin Çavuş, co-founder and head of strategy at Teyit , a fact-checking organization in Turkey. 
  • Paweł Terpiłowski, editor-in-chief of the verification media Demagog Association , Poland.
  • Phoebe Arnold has been working for the British fact-checking organization Full Fact for years .
  • Sally Mairs has been editor of AFP ‘s fact-checking team in Europe since 2021.  
  • Stefan Voss, head of verification at the German agency dpa
  • Thomas Hedin has helped create and develop the Danish verification medium TjekDet since 2016.
  • Tommaso Canetta, deputy director of the Italian verification outlet Pagella Politica , and coordinator of the data verification activities of the European Disinformation Observatory (EDMO).
  • Vincent Couronne, founder of the French organization Les Surligneurs , the first means of legal verification of facts and data.

The eleven members will be presented on November 16 at a public event in Brussels where they will meet with the main stakeholders in the field of disinformation from the institutions of the European Union, digital media platforms and civil society. European fact-checking organizations that wish to join the EFCSN network and, therefore, the Standards Code, will be able to start submitting their application in the first months of 2023.

This project is part of the Call of Integrity of Social Media of the European Commission and is led by six European organizations focused on the fight against disinformation: Fundación Maldita.es (Spain), AFP (France), CORRECTIV (Germany), DEMAGOG (Poland), Pagella Politica / Facta (Italy) and EU DisinfoLab (Belgium).
