What does it mean that Maldita.es is a foundation?

You know us as Maldita.es , but our full name is Maldita.es Foundation against disinformation: journalism, education, research and data in new formats. We are a non-profit foundation, which makes us stronger against lies, ensures our independence and helps us be more transparent with you. We are not a company and we do not depend on capitalist partners to whom we are financially accountable. We also do not belong to any other media or media group. We belong to civil society.

What does it mean to you that we are a foundation?

Maldita.es is yours (and civil society’s)

Being a foundation means that we belong to all the citizens and the malditos and malditas who make up our community. We don’t owe ourselves to anyone else. Maldita.es has no advertising or paywalls. Verified information must be available to all of society, and we count on you to make it possible

Currently 73% of our financing is through scholarships, philanthropy, awards and technological alliances (here you can see the details);  community contributions represent less than 4% of our income.

Keeping an independent media in operation, without having to sell our community’s attention to advertisers, requires that community members be involved in financially supporting the project. We need you by our side.

Greater transparency: monitor our accounts

At Maldita.es transparency is essential: you have the right to know our structure and know where the money comes from and how we spend it. In our Malditas Cuentas we break down where the money that finances our work comes from.

We answer to you, not to capitalist partners

Maldita.es is not a company: we are a non-profit foundation. All the economic resources we obtain are invested in improving and expanding our fight against disinformation, and not in distributing dividends, and you can see it . But we need economic resources to develop our work: to pay the journalists and professionals who make Maldita.es work, to buy the material necessary for our work, to have a working space, to travel to carry out training sessions…

SUPPORT US WITH A DONATION

These are some of the things we have done in 2020 thanks to the resources we have obtained:

  • We have launched Maldita Tecnología and expanded the Maldito Bulo and Maldita Ciencia team: there are more of us than in 2019, and many more than in 2018, but there is also more disinformation circulating, so we need more hands to combat it. Thanks to this expansion of the team we have been able to face the challenge of combating the disinformation that has circulated during the pandemic: almost 1,000 hoaxes debunked since it began and more than 1,000 explanatory articles.
  • We have consolidated Maldita Educa with new educational materials and media literacy projects.
  • We have launched the first verification bot in Spain to respond to queries about hoaxes much faster.
  • We have launched the redesign of our website, which goes beyond the aesthetic: internally we have new tools that make our fight against disinformation more effective.
  • We have improved the team’s working conditions since the beginning.
  • We have moved to a larger office that is more appropriate to the current needs of the team, updated the office supplies, we have been able to hire professional designers – and leave Paint aside a bit? – and new additions in areas that are less journalistically attractive, but necessary for Maldita.es to work , such as accounting, management and administration.
