Superpoderosas: we are looking for more presence of expert women on Maldita.es

Men are quoted as experts in the media three times more than women . Maldita.es is no stranger to these dynamics: of the more than 1,000 people who give us their superpowers in the scientific field, only 26% are women. Furthermore, as we counted when we reached 1000 collaborations with the superpowers community , just over 30% of the collaborations we have made with superpowered people are with women.

These data show that many perspectives are left out. Our goal with the superpowers of Maldita.es is to increase the diversity of voices in the media . For this reason, and thanks to the collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) , we redouble our efforts to increase the presence of women among the cursed men and women who present their superpowers to the foundation, with more scientists and experts in science that will collaborate in our content. They will be our Superpoderosas.

Superpoderosas podcasts, Twitch and TikTok, and alliances with scientific societies and universities

The Superpoderosas will be protagonists this season in our Malditas Twitcherías . They will star in a live scientific consultation in which they will resolve our community’s doubts live, they will have their own space in which they will be interviewed about their areas of knowledge and they will also participate in the Twitcherías in Maldita Educa to collaborate in the work of literacy and outreach. from scientific culture to citizenship.

We will also have our Superpoderosas on TikTok , with scientific consultations in which questions are asked by teenagers who consume this social network. In addition, the Superpoderosas will also be the stars of the new Maldita Ciencia podcast , in which the “Malditos” will dismantle hoaxes related to science, the environment and health with their superpowers, and will help us explain current scientific news in a simple way. The dissemination work of the Superpoderosas will be recognized with a certificate of collaboration with the Maldita.es Foundation.

At Maldita.es we know that to be more effective it is best to play as a team. For this reason, we are also working on creating alliances with different scientific and medical societies, universities and research centers . The objective is for them to invite their Superpoderosas to lend their superpowers as experts , join the fight against scientific hoaxes and join our dissemination work.

Female references in science and STEM for the youngest women

Increasing the visibility of experts is the main objective of Superpoderosas . The presence of more women in the media helps to increase the references for younger women and encourage their interest in scientific, technological, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers . In the 2018-2019 academic year, only 12.9% of those enrolled in IT were women, according to data from the Ministry of Education and FP. In engineering, construction and industry the figure rose timidly to 28.5% of those enrolled.

The impostor syndrome, the lack of references, thinking that they cannot contribute much or have little time available are some of the reasons that stop experts from taking the reins; We talked about it in one of our Twitcherías . But fighting hoaxes is everyone’s business, and you can do your part too! Help us fill Maldita.es with female references in the fight against misinformation.
