The project builds on the experience of Maldito Clima in detecting climate- and environment-related disinformation narratives that consistently circulate around each electoral cycle. Narratives such as the use of geoengineering to cause droughts, the alleged harms of renewable energy production, or the safety of electric vehicles are some examples. The Clima Informa approach goes a step beyond fact-checking: it seeks to explain these disinformation narratives in depth, from the places and with the people most affected by them, using data and facts.
To this end, Maldita.es will produce seven in-depth journalistic reports that will be published exclusively by seven media outlets in Spain up to next June. The outlets that have joined the project are 20 minutos, cadenaser.com, elDiario.es, La Marea, La Vanguardia and Servimedia. The seventh outlet will be selected from the Red de Periodistas locales contra la desinformación climática, which was established last January in Madrid.
The first report, “Coches eléctricos en llamas: cuánto hay de cierto y cuánto de desinformación” is already available in cadenaser.com.
