Maldita and Servimedia join forces to launch Discamedia to combat disinformation about disability and people with disabilities

Maldita.es and the news agency Servimedia, with the support of the Google News Initiative, have joined forces to combat disinformation that particularly affects people with disabilities in Spain. The aim is to create Discamedia, a news portal focused on debunking hoaxes and explaining issues related to disability and the challenges faced by people with disabilities.

In addition to disinformation that affects their living conditions due to a lack of awareness in society at large, people with disabilities may face greater difficulties in accessing reliable and rigorous information because of accessibility barriers on the internet.

Within this project, which launched in January 2023 and complies with all accessibility standards, Maldita.es will contribute by producing debunks that specifically affect people with disabilities, as well as publishing explanatory pieces on scientific, technological and administrative topics, among others related to disability.

The project was selected from 605 proposals submitted from 38 European countries and aims to be useful to the 4.3 million people in Spain living with some form of disability, according to Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE). This is the second collaboration between Maldita and Servimedia, part of the ONCE Social Group, following #VacúnaTE, launched in 2021 to combat disinformation about COVID-19 vaccines.
