Maldita App: download orur new tool to fight disinformation

At Maldita.es, we continue the fight against disinformation. Hoaxes are increasingly shared through mobile phones and apps like WhatsApp, which is why Maldita.es is launching the first mobile app that can notify you when you access a website that spreads disinformation or content that has already been debunked by our team.

How does the Maldita.es app work?

Through a push notification, the app will inform you if the website you are browsing regularly spreads misinformation, if it is a satirical site, or if the content you are accessing has already been fact-checked and debunked.

With the Maldita.es app, you can also search for previously debunked hoaxes using the integrated search engine and upload images from WhatsApp to check whether they have already been debunked by Maldito Bulo. If you cannot find the debunk you are looking for but believe the content is suspicious, you can also submit links and images for verification.

The Maldita.es app therefore joins the different channels available for alerting and helping the Maldito Bulo team debunk potential misinformation, alongside the WhatsApp channel and the Buloteca.

Don’t let them fool you — not even politicians

In the Maldita.es app, you can also check whether politicians’ statements are false, misleading, or true with nuances, thanks to the work of Maldito Dato. The team monitors politicians’ appearances in the media and verifies the data used in their statements to ensure accuracy.

You can also sign up for different alerts, such as our daily summary or — during this campaign and the European elections campaign — the “Campaign Misinformation” alerts: a daily roundup of the debunks and fact-checks we conduct on politicians’ statements, so you don’t miss a thing.

We started building the app for Android because, as data enthusiasts, we know that 87% of the population in Spain uses Android, compared to 12% who use iOS (according to the Ditrendia report: Mobile in Spain and the World 2018). For now, you can try it on your Android devices.

If you have an Android phone or tablet, you can already find the app in the Play Store and download it to try it out.
