It is one of the activities of the project “No more haters. Break the chain of hate!”, carried out with the support of Google.org. The campaign — which will be distributed through social media platforms until the end of 2021 — was designed by the agency Arnold Spain and includes two spots of 40” and 15”, a display piece, several tests aimed at identifying disinformation or different types of hate messages, typographic-style audiovisual capsules that identify specific examples of different hate messages aimed at different groups, and a sticker so that teenagers and young people can use it on social media in response to offensive comments.
The main piece of the campaign is a spot that calls on young people to get involved and learn how to identify, stop and report hate speech comments.
According to the study “Breaking the chains of hate, weaving support networks: young people and hate speech online”, carried out by Fad and Maldita.es במסגרת the “No More Haters” project, young people in Spain are very aware that on social media they are exposed to messages with an ideological and political charge from an early age, when they do not yet have the necessary tools to process them properly or to distinguish certain boundaries between what is acceptable and what is intolerable.
In addition, young people believe it is necessary to work on values and emotions. They feel the need to learn how to think critically and to develop their own emotional intelligence. They see digital literacy as important in order to combat hate speech.
On the other hand, 34% say they have suffered some kind of mistreatment on the internet or social media (“personal jokes they do not like, acts of exclusion, insults, threats...”) and 38.1% say they have seen, in the past year, “pages where people publish messages that attack certain individuals or groups”, according to a study carried out by Fad’s Reina Sofía Centre on Adolescence and Youth, based on a survey of 1,400 young people aged 14 to 24.
EDUCATIONAL APP
Another tool made available by the “No More Haters” project is an educational app so that teenagers and young people can identify hate speech and internalize the keys to fighting it. Its aim is to help them become active participants in the search for solutions and in the fight against hate, promoting processes that make it easier to identify hate speech, overcome prejudices and stereotypes, encourage intercultural dialogue, and provide critical thinking tools for online interactions.
“No more haters. Break the chain of hate!” is a responsive web app, available in Spanish and English. The web app includes games so that users can identify and react to hate situations and earn points if they get it right. The games involve guessing words related to hate, identifying disinformation, and taking part in hate situations as a victim or witness in order to know how to react. It also includes a points ranking and a hoax search engine so users can check the disinformation they receive. It can be downloaded on the main platforms such as Google Play and the App Store, and it can also be played online at https://play.nomorehaters.es/
The web app includes the option to play in classroom mode, and for this purpose a teaching guide has been designed to support teachers, including learning objectives, offline and online exercises, and assessment criteria. The teaching guide can be downloaded from the project website: https://nomorehaters.es/.
