From a global database against disinformation to investigate with the OSINT community: eleven ways to fight against Maldita.es disinformation in a month of Russian invasion of Ukraine*

One month has passed since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The irruption of Russian troops into Ukrainian territory on February 24, 2022 marks a before and after for the civilian population, the international community and also for a central issue in this war: disinformation. At Maldita.es we review what we have done this month so that you don’t miss out.

1. More than 120 hoaxes and disinformation debunked about Russia and Ukraine

Since Russian President Vladimir Putin informed the world of the start of the attacks, hundreds of videos and images supposedly linked to the Russian war against Ukraine have been disseminated, which we are collecting in a compilation. Until the date of publication of this article, after the first month since the invasion began, we had debunked more than 120 hoaxes .

Among them, we have verified videos of air attacks that are published as current although they were recorded in Libya in 2011 or in Beirut in 2020; but also contents of supposed downed fighters that corresponded to images created with a simulator or video games. Disinformation has also circulated about victims of the armed conflict who have been doubly victimized by campaigns, such as the Ukrainian woman injured in an explosion in Chuguyev or the pregnant woman injured in the Mariupol hospital explosion.

We have detected everything from invented subtitles that do not correspond to the sender’s words, to Twitter accounts that pose as media outlets. Also, frames from series have been shared to pass them off as real content of the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky.

2. #UkraineFacts: una base de datos mundial y colaborativa para luchar contra la desinformación

2. #UkraineFacts: a global, collaborative database to fight disinformation

All these lies, half-truths, disinformation without evidence have been circulating around the world since February 24th. The idea that this wave of disinformation would be occurring in other countries led Maldita.es to open a database and give it access to the more than 100 verifiers worldwide to begin collaborating. Since then, #UkraineFacts has carried out more than 900 verifications worldwide.

This valuable tool has also been used to create a map that gives access to the denials of the most viral hoaxes. In #UkraineFacts you can see in which countries each disinformation has been detected and access the denials of the different verification organizations that have investigated it.

3. Team O is born: community and OSINT to fight disinformation after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

Geolocate images, look for signs that a video is manipulated or not, check what time a shooting took place… Sometimes it is necessary to resort to one of these tools – or all of them – to resolve the queries you ask us on WhatsApp (+34 644 229 319) and the volume of hoaxes is such that we only have one option left: turn to our community of malditos and malditas.

Thus ‘The O Team‘ was born. O for OSINT: a volunteer anti-hoax brigade to combat disinformation about the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This team, made up of malditos and malditas who have lent us their OSINT-related superpowers, has been helping us for several weeks now to give context to videos and images related to the Russian attack on Ukraine. These are some of the articles they have helped us with.

Thanks to them we have been able, for example, to geolocate the photo of the military armored vehicles next to a building that they claimed was the children’s hospital in the city of Mariupol or we have been able to tell the story of the shootout between an alleged agent of the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) and the Ukrainian police.

Comparison of the elements that appear in the video of the shooting (above) with those on Google Maps (below).

With all the tools to verify, we have also tried to explain what we could know thanks to open intelligence sources, such as the bombing of a shopping center in Kyiv/Kiev on March 22. And to address other events such as, for example, the seizure of the former Chernobyl nuclear power plant on February 24, and its consequences on the variation in radiation, we have had tools such as the bot that monitors environmental data in Ukraine, SaveEcoBot, as well as with the help of experts and malditos’ superpowers.

4. We are analyzing the formats of disinformation and how they circulate

As we have told you, the manipulated content that we have found is presented in the form of images and videos already used in other contexts, such as the explosion of a petrochemical plant in Tarragona; fake magazine covers; tweets that impersonate media outlets like CNN; video game simulations or fake subtitles.

The Maldito Bulo and Maldita Educa teams are alert to identify the formats of disinformation about the war in Ukraine and are collecting them in a compilation. In recent weeks, deepfakes or ultra-realistic computer-generated videos have been detected to impersonate public figures. However, in the cases detected, of Zelensky and Putin, the poor quality of the assembly was very evident.

Another strategy identified is a campaign to misinform through false denial or false flag verification, which the Media Forensics Hub team at Clemson University and the organization ProPublica documented in an investigation published on March 8, and which also identified Maldita.es in Spain. Another focus of our work is the denialist disinformation accounts and groups that spread this content and have been active before, especially since the beginning of the coronavirus crisis.

5. From COVID-19 denialism to pro-Kremlin disinformers: the evolution of denier groups and their lies

The same groups that spread false information about the COVID-19 during the pandemic have now become disinformers regarding the invasion of Ukraine. These conspiracy circles have managed to gain thousands of followers thanks to the spread of hoaxes and fake news.

Many of them were previously known for sharing manipulated information and hoaxes related to the coronavirus, but many others have seen their influence increase thanks to the Ukrainian crisis. Among their hoaxes are, in addition to those previously mentioned in the article, disinformation about Zelensky, the current president of Ukraine.

He has been accused of being a Satanist, but also of being a cocaine addict and of having fled Ukraine when the conflict broke out. However, Zelensky himself has not stopped uploading images and videos from his office or even from the streets of Kiev.

He has also been accused of manipulating the information in one of his videos, specifically the one in which he visits a hospital, ensuring that the woman accompanying him is the deceased lieutenant Inna Derusova. At Maldita.es we deny this hoax: Zelensky’s companion is Tatiana Ostashchenko, commander of the Medical Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

6. We have told you how we use verification tools

At Maldita.es we are using a series of tools to fight disinformation and we have told you how we use them so that you can also verify on your own. Some of them are tools such as InVid,  Google Images reverse search or WayBack Machine, although we have also used geolocation maps such as Google Earth and even Wolfram Alpha Weather to determine the veracity of information. In addition to offering you our toolbox, Maldita Educa explains how each and every one of them is used with practical examples.

7. Updated panel of international sanctions against Russia in figures, affected and evolution by country

One of the first responses of the international community was to support Ukraine and try to pressure Russia through economic sanctions against the State and Russian companies. At Maldita.es we have created a monitor with graphics on the figures, those affected and the evolution of international sanctions  against Russia by country that you can consult here. This information will be updated daily based on Correctiv’s analysis of OpenSanctions data.

8. ‘Malditas Twitcherías’ on mental health, technological measures…

Anger, sadness, pain, empathy, worry, uncertainty, hope… The range of  emotions we feel when following the current situation in Ukraine is immense and has an obvious impact on mental health. In the  Maldita Ciencia Twitchería on March 3, we talked about the importance of mental health care in the context of Russia’s attack on Ukraine

Maldita Tecnología also addressed how digital spaces such as social networks and platforms are adapting to decisions that are being addressed in the context of war, such as the blocking of profiles, limitations on media outlets. In the Technological Twitchería on March 2, the relevance of cyberattacks as elements that aggravate the situation of vulnerability was addressed, as well as the transparency of platforms such as Meta (Facebook), Google or Apple with their decision-making.

9. Do we know which are the main communities of Ukrainians and Russians in Spain?

Yes, thanks to data. One month after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the UN estimates that 3.7 million refugees have fled from Ukraine to neighboring countries such as Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Moldova and Belarus. From there, and while fleeing the war, Ukrainians can seek a new home in the countries of the European Union, where an unprecedented measure has been approved: temporary protection for displaced Ukrainians. This measure is compatible with the application for asylum and grants a residence permit for 1 to 3 years, as well as access to employment, housing, social security and care for the beneficiaries.

The Maldito Dato and Maldita Migración teams tracked data from the INE municipal registry to identify the areas where there are communities of Ukrainians and Russians, given the possibility that people who leave their countries seek to reach where they have ties in Spain.

10. Have you gotten lost with the technological restrictions on Russia? We collect them for you

Not only countries retaliated against Russia after the invasion of Ukraine. Digital platforms and large technology companies have also  made decisions that Maldita Tecnología is  collecting in a constantly updated article. They have also explained to us in more detail the position of Meta (Facebook), which on March 11th decided to «temporarily» modify its policy on hate speech to allow messages that incite violence to be launched on social networks if they are against the «Russian invaders» in some European countries. They have also spoke about the use of Starlink satellites to connect to the Internet in Ukraine  and about the blocking of RT and Sputnik News by operators and social networks in Europe  or their disappearance from Google Europe.

11. The debunked disinformation collected on TikTok

Surely you already know this, but at Maldita.es we are very present on TikTok. So is disinformation related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as this NewsGuard study warned  about how this platform shows this content to new users in a matter of minutes. Therefore, in the midst of a wave of lies, half-truths and decontextualized virals, the team got to work to spread the denials when we exceeded 100 hoaxes or in five compilations [which you can see here: 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 and 5 ]. Remember! In crisis situations, do not share if you are not sure and send us everything that comes to you that makes you doubt to +34 644 229 319.
