The jury of the first Awards of the Association of Investigative Journalists (API) decided to award a special mention in the 2021 API Local Journalism Award to the Maldito Dato team for the work “Taxis, meals, press, surveys and legal advice: the accounts of the municipal groups of the Madrid City Council between 2015 and 2017 » published in February 2020.

The jury decided to award this special mention for «the good execution and methodology of the piece and the great team that signed it». The team that carried out the research is made up of Sergio Sangiao Pérez, Ignacio Calle Fernández, José Molina Gracia, Adela Vived Maza and Stéphane M. Grueso Lenoir.
In this research, the Maldita.es team accessed the accounts of the municipal groups of the Plenary Session of the Madrid City Council for the years 2015, 2016 and 2017; releasing and telling citizens –for the first time– the expenses of the different parties in the city of Madrid. The database details how the Popular Party, Ahora Madrid, PSOE and Ciudadanos spent the money they received in subsidies.
The 2021 API Local Journalism Award was awarded to journalist Isabel Cadenas for the work “A plaque in my town” published in the podcast «De eso no se habla». The jury highlights that it has «an excellent script and is wrapped in a totally local concept. At the same time, the theme has a vindictive character».
The award jury was made up of the Mexican reporter and Human Rights defender, Lydia Cacho; the photojournalist Jesús Blasco de Avellaneda; data journalist Paula Guisado (RTVE); Dr. Manuel Gertrudix (URJC) and the investigative journalist, Antonio Rubio (API).
