Together with 22 fact-checking organizations from Latin America, we joined the LatamChequea network today with the aim of preventing the spread of false and malicious information in Spanish. We will work together to verify suspicious content that crosses national borders.
At Maldita.es we have noticed that information in Spanish has no borders and a lot of the disinformation circulating in Spain is starting to reach Latin American countries and vice versa, so we believe that this effort will help us stop the lies faster and more effectively.
It takes 5 minutes to create disinformation, but it can take hours to refute it with serious and reliable information.
At a time when false rumors are multiplying and can be very damaging, we need more than ever to build on the work of others to be able to react as quickly as possible and provide reliable information to our audiences, said Olivia Sohr, coordinator of LatamChequea and Chequeado’s Special Projects.
This joint effort, coordinated by Chequeado from Argentina, also has a new website (www.chequeado.com/latamcoronavirus) with access to an updated consultation tool with the verifications and explanations on the coronavirus published by the 22 organizations. In addition, content that circulates and is common to the 15 countries that make up the network, such as false cures or treatments or conspiracy theories about the origin of the disease, among many others, will also be publish
The initiative is coordinated by Chequeado (Argentina), with the participation of Salud con Lupa, Agencia Lupa and Estadao Verifica (Brazil); Bolivia Verifica (Bolivia), La Silla Vacía and ColombiaCheck (Colombia); La Nación and La Voz de Guanacaste (Costa Rica); Periodismo de Barrio and El Toque (Cuba); Ecuador Chequea and GK (Ecuador); Agencia Ocote (Guatemala); Animal Político and Verificado (México); El Surtidor (Paraguay); Ojo Público and Convoca (Peru); Poletikard (Dominican Republic); UyCheck (Uruguay); and Efecto Cocuyo (Venezuela). You can see all the information they publish in this Twitter list.
