Maldita Ciencia, winner of the Prisma Casa de las Ciencias award for Scientific Dissemination 2020 for best new medium

The jury of the Prismas Casa de las Ciencias awards for Dissemination awarded by the Coruña Scientific Museums of the A Coruña City Council decided to award the recognition of best new medium to Maldita Ciencia for being «an example of responsible dissemination, which knows how to be agile without losing rigor, and a necessary service in the midst of growing misinformation.

This year’s jury was made up of:

  • Pilar Perla Mateo: coordinator of the Tercer Milenio supplement of Heraldo de Aragón and the D+i Innovative Dissemination Conferences.
  • Lucas Sánchez Sampedro: director of Scienseed.
  • Laura Chaparro Domínguez: science journalist.
  • Susana Ladra González: professor at the UDC.
  • Joana Cristina Silva Magalhaes: INIBIC researcher and scientific communicator.
  • David Ballesteros Alvarez: scientific communicator and creative manager at Ceo Aberto SL.
  • Marcos Pérez Maldonado: head of service of the Coruña Scientific Museums.

This award, which has been given since 1988, has recognized the journalistic work of prestigious scientific publications such as Agencia Sinc, Muy Interesante or Materia. Last year it awarded the recognition of best new media outlet to GCiencia .

This year it also awarded the prize in other categories to:

  • Video: « Des-Extinción », broadcast on TVE, scripted and directed by Alfonso Par for Turkana Films.
  • Unpublished text: « Expedition to the salt volcano », by Silbia López de Lacalle.
  • Edited book: « Science without fiction », by Jesús Méndez, Pere Estupinyá, Javier Salas, Sergio C. Fanjul and Belén Gopegui, edited by  Debate
  • Honorable mention: « Orgas (myths) », by Laura Morán Fernández, published by  Next Door Publisher .
  • Newspaper article: « The secret life of trees », by Laura González de Rivera, published in  Muy Interesante .
  • Radio: « The wonderful chemistry of everyday things » , by Antonio Rivera, broadcast on  A Ciencia Verdad , on CV Radio.
  • Singular project: « PDICiencia » , by Diego Ortega Alonso and the Association of Relatives and Friends of People with Intellectual Disabilities.
  • Honorable mention: “Estrela Rosalía   from the  Coruñesa Ío Astronomical Group
  • Special Prism of the Jury: Francisco Javier Novelle Secades for the promotion of scientific culture from a civic association.

For this award, Maldita Ciencia will receive a bronze statuette and a prize of €4,000 to support the work it already does.

Maldita Ciencia is a Maldita.es project to combat misinformation and disseminate scientific information on health, food, physics, chemistry, astronomy, climate with a simple and different approach.
