Between June 7th and 9th, 2022, Maldita.es will participate in the Advanced Course on Verification and new narratives on fact checking for Namibian journalists. The event will take place in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, and is organized by Casa África and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union, and Cooperation.
Andrés Jiménez, coordinator of Maldito Bulo, will conduct three workshops during the event, addressing the reasons why disinformation is spread and the tools that verifiers have at their disposal to fight against it.
The meeting will also feature participation from Tomás Rudich, a journalist from Newtral, and Keegan Leech, a researcher from Africa Check, both members of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), which Maldita.es is also a part of.
Casa África considers it «absolutely necessary and urgent to help improve communication» on the neighboring continent.
This public consortium has been working for decades to strengthen the relationships between Spanish and African journalists, with the goal of fostering a balanced and stereotype-free view of the continent and also to serve as a bridge between Spanish and African media.
In December 2021, it organized, along with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union, and Cooperation and the Kenya Media Council, the III Journalist Meeting Africa Spain, which took place in Nairobi (Kenya). The CEO and co-founder of Maldita.es, Clara Jiménez Cruz, led the workshop «Disinformation: How do ‘the bad ones’ work? Motivations and techniques.»
Furthermore, during May 2022, Casa África started a project to raise awareness among Secondary Education students in the Canary Islands about the importance of knowing how to identify the disinformation that affects migrants. Clara Jiménez and Laura del Río, coordinator of Maldita Educa, participated in the project through a conference and several workshops with secondary school students.
