Maldita.es collaborates with the University of Córdoba (UCO) on a campaign against climate misinformation through bar napkins

La Fundación Maldita.es has advised the Unit of Scientific Culture of the University of Córdoba (UCO) on “Limpiando Bulos”, a campaign designed to debunk myths and misinformation about climate change using 70,000 napkins distributed in several bars across the city of Córdoba.

The napkins feature a QR code that, when scanned with a mobile phone, gives access to 10 infographics that debunk myths about climate change and explain scientific data and evidence on the topic. For example, they address the claim that “Climate change has happened before, so it is not caused by humans,” or provide data showing that “Climate change has accelerated sea level rise.”

Maldita.es, which has its own project to combat climate disinformation, Maldito Clima, collaborated on the initiative by advising on the design of the infographics. In addition, the napkins include the phone number of the Maldita.es WhatsApp chatbot (+34 644 229 319), a tool through which citizens can ask questions and automatically verify content.

The initiative was supervised by research groups from the University of Córdoba — “Fluvial Dynamics and Hydrology,” “Terrestrial Ecology,” and “Evaluation and Restoration of Agricultural and Forest Systems” — three teams whose research lines are closely linked to environmental and climate change issues.

The campaign was presented on March 11 in Córdoba at an event attended by José Luis Quero, Director General for International Projects at the University of Córdoba; Rocío Benavente, Editorial Projects Coordinator at Maldita.es; members of the research teams that supervised the initiative; and owners of the establishments where the napkins and infographics will be distributed.
