Maldita.es joins Sunlight.Europe to tackle electoral disinformation through citizen participation

The Fundación Maldita.es is participating in Sunlight.Europe, a collaborative journalism project that brings together journalists and citizens to investigate political candidates and public officials, combat disinformation, and help voters access reliable, verified information ahead of elections.

The initiative will run in Spain, Montenegro and Switzerland from autumn 2026 until the end of 2027. Sunlight.Europe aims to strengthen political transparency and accountability through public-interest investigations and greater citizen involvement.

Sunlight.Europe promotes collaboration between journalists and citizens as a way to expand investigative capacity and facilitate access to reliable information about people seeking public office or already holding elected positions.

The initiative combines professional journalism with citizen participation while maintaining editorial independence and rigorous fact-checking standards. Through its involvement, Maldita.es aims to make it easier for more people to contribute to public scrutiny of political representatives and strengthen democratic accountability.

The consortium comprises:

Maldita.es will launch La Buloteca Elecciones 29N, a dedicated website enabling citizens to contribute to investigations into electoral disinformation ahead of Spain’s general election on 29 November 2026. Citizens will be able to submit information and tips, helping the Maldita.es newsroom produce fact-checks, explainers and investigative reports. All content published through the platform will form part of the organisation’s election coverage.

The Fundación Maldita.es will receive €20,000 in funding from the consortium to carry out its activities. The project is supported by the Adessium Foundation.
