Maldita.es launches La Buloteca Elecciones 29N to investigate campaign disinformation together with the public

La Buloteca is Maldita.es’s tool that enables its community to help verify suspicious content. During the election campaign, it will bring together all open cases related to the elections in one place: videos, images, WhatsApp messages, statements and data that need to be checked before they can be considered reliable.

How it works

Anyone can take part in three steps:

  1. Browse the open cases. Each case concerns content that is circulating and has not yet been verified.

  2. Contribute a clue. This could be a link, an original source, a date, an earlier version of an image or any information that helps confirm or debunk the content.

  3. Follow the case until it is resolved. The Maldita.es team reviews the clues and publishes its fact-check.

You can also send suspicious content via WhatsApp to open a new case.

Investigation toolkit

La Buloteca Elecciones 29N includes a toolkit of nine short videos to help people learn how to fact-check content themselves:

  • Five basic tips to avoid falling for disinformation

  • Reverse image search

  • How to detect AI-generated content

  • How to check whether a tweet is real

  • How to find out what is being voted on and said in the Spanish Congress

  • The electoral calendar

  • Who decides what in an election

  • How to check candidate lists

  • How to read an opinion poll

Each video links to tools and official sources such as Google Lens, the Wayback Machine, Spain’s Official State Gazette (BOE), the Spanish Congress website and the Central Electoral Commission.
