Until December 2024, Maldita.es, together with seven fact-checking organizations from three European countries (Georgia, Ukraine and Lithuania) and four Latin American countries (Argentina, Venezuela, Colombia and Mexico) will study and analyze disinformation campaigns that cross borders through private messaging applications.
This collaborative project, funded by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), aims to improve technological capabilities for the detection, analysis and classification of disinformation for fact-checking organizations in Eastern Europe and Eurasia; while allowing interconnection with other organizations in Latin America and Spain to study the circulation of disinformation.
The alliance will allow fact-checkers to identify and analyze cross-border disinformation campaigns as well as their evolution and transformation. As a result, these organizations will publish a series of investigations with the results obtained and will be able to improve their strategies to combat misinformation.
Both the network and the innovative tools that support it will serve as a model for future efforts to foster cross-border and interregional collaboration in the face of the broad and diverse challenges in the fight against disinformation. It will also pave the way for greater cooperation between project partners and other organizations, as the network has the potential to expand to include new countries, regions and disinformation topics, contributing to global efforts to build more coordinated, better-informed systems. and ultimately more impactful responses to this global challenge.
