Superpoderosas: More than 200 expert women join Maldita.es to fight disinformation

Superpoderosas are the expert knowledge that more than 3,000 damned people give us to fight against hoaxes. Thanks to them we are more effective in the fight against misinformation, denying hoaxes and explaining doubts that citizens send us.

This project, possible thanks to the collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), has allowed us to increase the number of experts registered in our superpowers community by 22%. Almost 70% of these incorporations correspond to STEM experts and, thanks to their participation, throughout the duration of the project our collaboration with members of the superpowers community has been equal . We have compiled the collaborations of the Superpoderosas project : from participation in clinics, resolving doubts from the rest of the community; to contributions to debunking myths and hoaxes… And even Twitch streams and podcasts!

Superpoderosas on Twitch and TikTok

The Superpoderosas have become protagonists of a dozen Maldita Twitchería programs in which they told us, among other things, what their work in scientific dissemination consists of , what their career has been, what their opinion is on the use of technology in class , or what they do to motivate other women to study any of the STEM disciplines and reduce the gender gap . In that same format, we have broadcast six ‘Live Scientific Consultations’ ( 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ) in which we resolved some questions that the community sent us through social networks.

The collaboration of the Superpoderosas also allowed us to find the keys to twelve queries that we resolved on our TikTok , dismantling hoaxes related to science, the environment and health.  Llanlle Millán, nuclear physicist and radiation technologist, for example, helped us with her superpowers to debunk the hoax that claimed that the WHO had ordered the world to “prepare for a nuclear war . ” For their part, the superpowers Soraya Calvo, Silvia Catalán, Francisca Molero and Irene Martínez  also helped us resolve common doubts and myths about masturbation.

More than 250 Superpoderosas collaborations and alliances with scientific societies and universities

We know that together it is more difficult to get caught. For this reason, and thanks to ‘Superpoderosas’, we have created alliances with seven scientific and medical societies with the aim that their experts also participate in the processes of denying and contextualizing hoaxes and in content on science and technology, providing their knowledge to contribute to scientific dissemination. 

The participation of the Superpoderosas in Maldita.es has been fundamental for the development of our work during the last few months. Since the beginning of the project, they have helped us on more than 250 occasions: in more than 185 published articles, with participation in Twitcherías, TikToks and in the Superpoderosas podcast .

This project has also allowed us to launch Superpoderosas, the podcast for women in science and technology on Maldita.es . There are four episodes in which we have chatted with four women experts from our community about scientific dissemination, their daily life and a great challenge in their sector: the role of women in academia and the importance of the gender perspective in science . In addition to the necessary perspective of women in the media, a greater presence of experts in them helps to increase references for younger women and to maintain their interest in scientific, technological, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers.
