Maldita.es, together with a group of researchers from the University of Granada, won a grant from the European Media and Information Fund (EMIF) to investigate the dynamics of disinformation in public channels on the private messaging platform Telegram to analyze how different narratives of disinformation emerge, spread and evolve and improve the available evidence to reduce the distribution of false content on similar platforms.
In collaboration with researchers from the University of Granada, an open and replicable research methodology will be developed and implemented, using artificial intelligence models and machine learning techniques to improve the scope of the results. Maldita.es will mobilize its extensive communication channels and networks to promote the results of the research broadly among citizens and decision makers, raising awareness about the nature and dangers of misinformation on Telegram.
Maldita.es will also develop a position paper based on the results of research that addresses the dynamics of misinformation on private messaging platforms such as Telegram. This document will set out a clear stance on the issue, highlight key concerns and launch a call to action with recommendations for stakeholders such as governments, platforms and civil society organisations.
Finally, with the support of researchers at the University of Granada, we will develop an automated disinformation glossary tool based on research results that will improve the effective monitoring of disinformation narratives on Telegram.
Maldita.es has received €77,792.10 from EMIF for the execution of the project. The total budget of the project is €146,899.80.
EMIF is a fund of the European University Institute and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation with funding from the Google News Initiative. The fund supports collaborative efforts to debunk misinformation, expand independent fact-checking, and enable targeted research and innovation tools designed to strengthen ecosystem resilience and response to misinformation.
