Maldita.es Foundation wins the 2023 Communication Award from the Spanish Data Protection Agency

The Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) awards the 2023 Personal Data Communication Award to the set of multi-format content prepared by Maldita Tecnología on the challenges that artificial intelligence poses for our personal information .

This category recognizes journalistic works that are “an outstanding contribution to the dissemination and promotion of data protection principles among citizens and/or promote awareness among those who handle personal information.” 

The award-winning coverage includes 25 journalistic pieces with a multi-format approach , including articles on the Maldita.es website , live broadcasts on the “Malditas Twitcherías” and chapters of the “Maldita La Hora” podcast, which have also been broadcast through the Maldita Tecnología newsletter, Tech in one click, on all our social networks and on the Telegram and WhatsApp channels.

They have explained the new challenges of artificial intelligence and data protection to address current debates and future doubts. Three large thematic blocks stand out: images generated with AI, manipulated videos such as deepfakes and citizens’ rights. 

Coverage has sought to explain the doubts generated by this technology and provide citizens with tools, not only to defend themselves against the misinformation generated by AI, but also to promote awareness about our personal data and its relationship with artificial intelligence .

Some of the content that is awarded is a podcast about image rights and AI ; synthetic voices and voice rights, the Twitch program about how technology is given a voice ; and AI in relation to intellectual property, plagiarism and responsibility for errors or  this newsletter about the AI ​​law on which the European Parliament is working , in addition to multiple articles

The AEPD also awarded awards this year to the following people and organizations: 

  • Dissemination of the fundamental right to data protection on social networks: , Eduard Blasi Casgran and Elena Gil González. Second prizes ex aequo: Elena and Laura Davara Fernández de Marcos and F. Javier Sempere Samaniego.
  • Entrepreneurship in data protection ‘Ángela Ruiz Robles’: Internxt Universal Technologies.
  • Initiatives and Good Practices for the protection of women against digital violence: ANAR Foundation.
  • Proactivity and Good Practices in Compliance with the European Data Protection Regulation and the Organic Law on the Protection of Personal Data and Guarantee of digital rights: Barcelona Institute of Global Health. ex aequo: Data Protection Delegation of the Generalitat Valenciana, the Working Group for data protection of the Community of Madrid and the Provincial Council of Segovia. 
  • Good Educational Practices in Privacy and Protection of Personal Data for responsible and safe use of the Internet by minors:  CEIP Villafría de Otero (Asturias), in the form of educational centers. Ex aequo: Spanish Association of Pediatrics, Date a Vuelta Association and the C1B3RPOLICÍA Unit of the Local Police of Rincón de la Victoria (Málaga). 
  • Research on personal data protection ‘Emilio Aced: ‘ Yod Samuel Martín García.

The AEPD has recognized the work of Maldita.es on two previous occasions: in 2022 it granted the second prize in Communication to the Maldita Twitchería programs dedicated to data protection, and in 2020 also the second prize for content dedicated to privacy, use data, technology ethics and digital rights .

The award ceremony will be held on January 29 in Madrid, coinciding with the International Day for the Protection of Personal Data.
