Clima Informa is the project of Maldita.es Foundation aimed at preventing misinformation related to climate and the environment by providing accurate and contextual information in the six months leading up to the European Parliament elections on June 9th. Climate misinformation has become one of the main factors of public polarization, especially on digital platforms and social media, making it an important topic of debate ahead of the electoral call.
The project draws on the experience of Maldito Clima in identifying misleading narratives about climate and the environment that consistently circulate with each electoral call. Narratives such as the use of geoengineering to cause drought, the harm attributed to renewable energy production, or the safety of electric cars are some examples. Clima Informa goes beyond mere fact-checking; it seeks to provide in-depth explanations of these misleading narratives from the perspectives and with the involvement of those most affected, supported by data and facts.
Therefore, Maldita.es will produce seven journalistic reports exclusively published by seven media outlets in Spain until next June. The participating outlets include 20 minutos, cadenaser.com, elDiario.es, La Marea, La Vanguardia and Servimedia. The seventh outlet will be chosen from the network of Local Journalists against Climate Misinformation, established last January in Madrid.
The first of the reports, «Electric Cars in Flames: How Much Is True and How Much Is Misinformation,» is already available to read on cadenaser.com.
Clima Informa will culminate in Madrid with an event in June, where the results of Clima Informa will be presented, and the issue of misinformation affecting citizens in Spain will be addressed in the context of the 2024 European Parliament elections.
For the development of Clima Informa, the Maldita.es Foundation receives financial support from the European Climate Foundation.
