The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in collaboration with the Government of Chile, will hold the 31st World Press Freedom Day Conference from May 2 to 4 in Santiago de Chili. This edition focuses on the vital importance of journalism and freedom of expression in the context of the current global environmental crisis, and during the conference, Maldita.es will contribute to the verification laboratory coordinated by the group of fact-checkers Arab Fact-Checkers Network ( AFCN ), which belongs to the network of investigative journalists in the Arab world Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism ( ARIJ ).
During the event, 26 content creators, activists, students, journalists and photographers will develop informative materials on press freedom and the climate crisis , and will offer support in the preparation of articles for other Space participants. The laboratory in which Maldita.es participates together with verifiers from Lebanon ( ARIJ ), Chile ( Fast Check ), Jordan ( AFCN ) and Nigeria ( The Cable ), will focus on the verification of the content produced. Likewise, the organizations will provide fact-checking training sessions to the participants.
This meeting is an initiative within the Youth Multimedia Space , coordinated by prominent members of the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas, the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and the University of Chile. During this event, the organizations, in collaboration with the 26 participants, will focus on creating content to raise awareness about climate change. Additionally, the lab will work on developing a pre-publication verification guide for newsroom content.
As part of the commemoration of World Press Freedom Day, celebrated every May 3, Chile and UNESCO will host the thirty-first World Press Freedom Day Conference from May 2 to 4, 2024. During this meeting, more than 40 parallel events will take place .
This year’s edition is dedicated to the importance of journalism and freedom of expression in the current global environmental crisis – climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution – its connections with public health, the need to strengthen democracy and combat disinformation.
