Maldita.es and Verificat , the fact-checking medium in Catalan, join forces in the framework of the Catalan elections this May 12 with the aim of providing citizens in Spanish and Catalan with verified information to fight against the misinformation that circulates through platforms and social networks and is present in the public debate through the multiple interviews, rallies and debates in which the candidates to preside over the Generalitat participate.
Both organizations, which are signatories of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) Code of Principles and members of the European Fact-Checking Standards Network (EFCSN) , understand that collaboration between entities in the verification ecosystem is key to broadening the echo of the political fact-checking publications, denials and explanatory articles among their respective communities.
Transparency plays a fundamental role in this agreement: both in the republished articles of each of the organizations and in the publications on social networks , it is clearly indicated which entity is the original author of the content. Furthermore, in the first paragraph of the texts a source is linked where you can consult the methodology used, which guides the team’s work, guarantees nonpartisanship and neutrality, and strengthens the credibility and trust of the community.
Since the president of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonés, decided to bring forward the elections to the Parliament of Catalonia last March, misinformers have spread dozens of hoaxes about the candidates of different parties, about migration and aid or about Catalan companies that have compiled Maldita.es .
For its part, Verificat has dedicated its efforts to following and monitoring the public discourse of the candidates of the eight main parties competing in the May 12 elections in the up to five organized debates and in the various interviews they have given. This team has applied its political fact-checking methodology to statements that have ranged from climate change, drought or tourism to the execution of public spending, migration and crime.
