Maldita.es and the news agency Servimedia, with the support of the Google News Initiative, have joined forces to combat disinformation that particularly affects people with disabilities in Spain.
The goal is to create Discamedia , a news portal focused on debunking hoaxes and explaining issues related to disability and the difficulties faced by people who suffer from it.
In addition to the disinformation that affects their living conditions due to the general society’s lack of knowledge, people with disabilities may find it more difficult to access reliable and rigorous information due to access barriers on the Internet.
In this project, which will be launched in January 2023 and will comply with all accessibility standards, Maldita.es will participate by preparing debunks that expressly affect people with disabilities, as well as publishing explanatory pieces on scientific, technological or administrative topics, among others related to disability.
This project was selected from among the 605 submitted to the call from 38 European countries, and aims to benefit the 4.3 million people in Spain who live with some type of disability, according to the INE. It is Maldita’s second collaboration with Servimedia, part of the ONCE social group, after #VacúnaTE, which was launched in 2021 to fight disinformation about COVID-19 vaccines.
