Maldita.es analyzes, together with Reset, online misinformation during the 23-J electoral campaign and the response of the large digital platforms

Maldita.es Foundation and the Reset organisation are working together on a project to analyze online disinformation during the general election campaign on July 23 and to examine whether digital platforms respond to it in accordance with their conditions of service and standards of the new European Digital Services Law (DSA).

The idea is to observe public messages on different networks that contain disinformation related to the elections that has already been denied by Maldita.es according to our methodology . Subsequently, it will be analyzed what type of actions different platforms such as Twitter, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram or YouTube have taken in this regard , if they have taken any.

In the course of this campaign we have already debunked a multitude of hoaxes that affect candidates of both political groups , or that baselessly attack the cleanliness of the electoral process. We believe that a systematic analysis of how these hoaxes move within the platforms can be very useful to make measures against disinformation more effective in the future.

We collaborate with Reset in the observation, but we will also contribute our experience in the analysis and when drawing conclusions. We believe that the correct application of the new European regulation of the Digital Services Act (DSA) and the Code of Practice on Disinformation needs studies so that they can see the real impact of disinformation on large digital platforms , especially in particularly difficult times. sensitive like elections.

Maldita.es, as a member of the permanent Task Force of the Code of Practice on Disinformation, believes that it is necessary to collaborate with investigations that analyze online disinformation in a structural way , in order to improve society’s response to organized manipulation. We hope to tell you more about the conclusions we draw from this study in the coming months.
