Maldita Tecnología wins a grant from the European IJ4EU fund to conduct a journalistic research on how apps use personal data

The jury of the Research Support Scheme of the Investigative Journalism for Europe (IJ4EU) fund, led by the International Press Institute (IPI), has decided to award a grant to the Maldita Tecnología team, in partnership with Tactical Tech and SocialTic, to carry out a journalistic investigation into the use of personal data provided by users of apps.

The grants support journalists from the European Union and other countries to work on collaborative investigations. In the first round of grants awarded in 2021, Maldita Tecnología’s project was selected along with 13 other proposals.

This fund guarantees the editorial independence of the investigations; the projects supported were selected by a five-member jury, led by Mexican investigative journalist Lydia Cacho, to ensure the integrity of the selection process and to guarantee the separation between donors and grant recipients.

90% of the funding for this program is provided by the European Commission and is awarded through a consortium of organizations led by IPI and including the European Journalism Center and the European Center for Press Freedom and Media

An independent jury of editors and investigative journalists selects the projects and ensures the integrity of the selection process by maintaining a firewall between donors and IJ4EU grantees.
