Maldita.es participates in the creation of the largest fact-checking database for the 2024 European Elections

Maldita.es is collaborating in the project led by the association of verification organizations European Fact-Checking Standards Network (EFCSN) in collaboration with more than 40 fact-checking entities in Europe to create a database that allows the fight against disinformation related to the 2024 European Parliament elections.

This project, Elections24Check , is pioneering and supported by the Google News Initiative. In its system, it compiles political fact-checking publications, denials, explanatory articles and reports produced by participating organizations in a database with the aim of identifying disinformation trends and narratives on the continent.

On the project website , users can search and filter for articles in different languages, related to specific countries, political parties or topics such as climate change, migration or security and defense. The objective is for European citizens to have quick access to data and facts to make decisions before the elections to be held in June.

Users will also be able to find statistical information on disinformation trends that can be analyzed by time period or country.

Carlos Hernández-Echevarría, president of EFCSN and deputy director of Maldita.es , explains that “the Elections24Check project offers an early detection system for disinformation that arises in different countries, not only in the European Union, but also in neighboring European countries. . This is important because disinformation knows no borders.»

Google’s Vice President of Government Affairs and Public Policy for Europe, Annette Kroeber-Riel, added, «We are proud to support the work of fact-checking organizations across Europe at a crucial time, as electoral disinformation can travel to across borders and endanger democratic processes. This initiative led by the EFCSN, and its more than 40 affiliated organizations, will support quality information for voters and pave the way for electoral coalitions in the future.
