Fundación Maldita.es is one of the 25 organizations selected by the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) to receive a grant that will enable it to explore new approaches to strengthening its financial sustainability.
The IFCN selected Fundación Maldita.es as one of the 25 fact-checking organizations awarded funding through SUSTAIN 2026, a program of the Global Fact Check Fund that is distributing $750,000 to help fact-checkers develop sustainable sources of revenue.
Fundación Maldita.es will use its $30,000 grant to explore new revenue models based on its technological development and expertise in data.
The IFCN received 50 eligible applications in the third round of the program and selected 25 organizations from regions around the world, including several based in Europe.
As noted in an IFCN statement, the awards come at a time when fact-checking organizations worldwide are facing shrinking institutional funding, fewer partnerships with digital platforms, and growing demand for fact-checking. This pressure is not limited to smaller or newer organizations: well-established newsrooms and fact-checking organizations across all regions are also navigating this increasingly constrained funding landscape.
"These organizations all face challenges, yet they are publishing regularly, building training programs, developing AI tools and creating new revenue streams," said IFCN Director Angie Drobnic Holan. "SUSTAIN grants give them the runway to execute plans for future growth without sacrificing their core work in the meantime."
