National Security convenes fact-checkers, press associations and platforms to create an expert group on disinformation

The National Security Department is working to set up an expert group on disinformation. A first meeting has already taken place to consult more than 30 organizations, including Maldita.es, as well as other fact-checkers, major internet platforms, universities, journalists’ associations, press organizations, media representatives and other entities.

Following the controversy over the protocol for action against disinformation promoted by the National Security Council — and specifically the creation of a governmental disinformation commission — at Maldita.es we have already explained why we believe a government should not decide what is true and what is not, and why the fight against disinformation cannot be carried out by bodies that are not independent.

The expert group has not yet been established, but the initial idea is that it will lead to working groups that examine more specific aspects of disinformation in Spain, from the current state of legislation to the most appropriate terminology to describe it. It is still too early to know what will come of it, but it could be a step in the right direction: solutions to disinformation that include all relevant stakeholders and are grounded in a strong respect for freedom of expression.
