The Communication category of the 2022 Data Protection Awards recognises journalistic work that “makes an outstanding contribution to the dissemination and promotion of data protection principles among citizens and/or raises awareness among those who handle information of their responsibility in guaranteeing this right”. Maldita Tecnología also received the runner-up Communication Award at the 2020 Data Protection Awards for its work addressing issues of privacy, data use, technology ethics and digital rights.
The jury of the AEPD 2022 Data Protection Awards recognised Maldita.es with the runner-up prize in the Communication category for the programmes: “Patrones oscuros y manipulación online: ¿sabes cómo te la intentan colar?”, “Acoso online: ¿cómo lo identificamos y cómo actuamos ante él?”, “¿Nos importa realmente lo que pasa con nuestros datos? Maldita Tecnología responde” y “La privacidad de tus conversaciones: por qué importa el debate sobre el cifrado”.
The main prize in the Communication category went to the Science and Technology desk of Agencia EFE, for works such as “Photos of children: think before uploading them to social media” and “Think before you scan: QR codes can be a gateway to scams”.
The 2022 Data Protection Awards are granted in six categories: Entrepreneurship ‘Ángela Ruiz Robles’; Initiatives for greater protection of women’s privacy against digital violence; Good practices for compliance with regulations; Communication; Educational good practices for the responsible and safe use of the internet by minors; and Research ‘Emilio Aced’.
The Maldita Tecnología programmes in the Maldita Twitchería aim to be spaces for outreach and media literacy on issues related to the social impact of technology, providing tools to raise public awareness about the risks linked to the misuse of personal data so that people can make better informed decisions.
