Starting this Monday, 3 July, and until election day, Comprobado will offer the most relevant fact-checks linked to the electoral process. This is public service content produced in line with the principles of journalistic ethics, investigative methodology and transparency, in order to provide an agile response from the fact-checking community to the snap general election call and the growth of disinformation.
According to the latest Winter Eurobarometer conducted by the European Commission, 86% of Spaniards believe that the existence of content that distorts reality or is false is a problem for democracy. That figure is five points above the European average. Specifically on politics, the Reuters Institute’s 2021 Digital News Report Spain reveals that 50% of internet users in Spain say they have been exposed to hoaxes on that subject.
This coalition builds on the Comprobado experience in 2019, the first collaborative project to independently verify electoral information in Spain. In this 2023 edition, efforts are focused on increasing the reach of verified content and offering media outlets useful information for their audiences that complements election coverage.
