We have all heard that we should prioritize eating seasonal fruits and vegetables, but what exactly does it mean for a product to be “seasonal”?
There is no official definition. Generally, a seasonal food is understood to be one that is grown outdoors according to its natural growing cycle and the climate conditions of a specific region, as explained in this new educational song created by Maldita.es.
Seasons are not fixed. They depend on factors such as climate, location, altitude, and crop variety. The same food may be seasonal in one place and not in another, which is why we refer to local seasonality. In addition, seasonal calendars vary from year to year depending on weather conditions (for example, a dry year is different from a year with abundant rainfall).
This resource aims to make learning easier and more engaging while helping people understand the importance of consuming seasonal and locally produced foods. Both approaches contribute to reducing environmental impact, supporting local producers, and promoting more sustainable food systems.
