Fundación Maldita.es launches the CIRCLE project to strengthen citizen participation against disinformation in Europe

Fundación Maldita.es has launched CIRCLE (Citizen Integration for Resilient Collaboration against Disinformation in Europe), an initiative co-funded by the European Union through ECAS (European Citizen Action Service), with the goal of promoting citizen participation as a key tool in the fight against disinformation.

The project will focus on developing a transferable model of citizen participation, based on Fundación Maldita.es’s approach to tackling disinformation, particularly initiatives such as the Buloteca. The aim is for this model to be adapted by organizations, researchers, and social actors across different European contexts.

Over its seven-month duration, CIRCLE will combine research, training, and knowledge exchange. One of its main lines of work is a study on Maldita.es’ community strategy, with the aim of analyzing how active citizen participation can help detect, understand, and counter disinformation collaboratively. As a result of the project, a manual and a set of practical resources will be developed to facilitate the dissemination of the model and its application in different contexts.

The project also includes a training and dissemination programme targeting different audiences. On the one hand, a training programme will be developed for European partners and stakeholders, focusing on citizen participation in the fight against disinformation, as well as on practical methods and tools based on the project’s materials. On the other hand, a series of webinars in a panel discussion format will be organized to present and disseminate these tools and foster the exchange of experiences. These sessions will be aimed at civil society organizations, professionals, and researchers across Europe.

With this initiative, Fundación Maldita.es seeks to contribute to a more resilient society in the face of disinformation by fostering active citizen engagement and strengthening the capacities of organizations and communities across Europe.

How much funding will Fundación Maldita.es receive for the project?

CIRCLE is a project co-funded by the European Citizen Action Service (ECAS) within the framework of the EURECA Plus project, as part of the Call for Proposals: Grants to ECAS members in the EU – 2026. Fundación Maldita.es will receive €13,999.30 to implement the activities between May and November 2026.
